Charged EVs | Elkem develops new powder for 3D printing of electrical motors

Chemical compounds firm Elkem and its mission companions VTT, Siemens, Stellantis and Gemmate Applied sciences have developed a 3D printing powder for EV motors.

The event is a part of the SOMA mission, which goals to develop light-weight options for e-mobility by utilizing additive manufacturing for tender magnetic alloys. Elkem has developed a brand new specialised iron silicon powder  (with components) for printing. The fabric  is tender magnetic, making it simple to magnetize and de-magnetize for electrical motors. A small-scale pilot atomizer on the Future Supplies Norwegian Catapult Centre in Kristiansand produces it. 

The powder has been used to 3D-print elements for analysis of the standard and manufacturing of demo units. The 3D printing and half qualification has been executed at VTT in Finland and Siemens in Germany. The ultimate use case was to provide a motor for an electrical scooter. The use case was supported by modeling carried out by Gemmate-Applied sciences and VTT.

“The powder developed within the SOMA mission will now be launched to the market by Elkem for evaluating the product for future business manufacturing,” stated Jan Ove Odden, Venture Lleader at Elkem. “The product is presently out there in small check volumes.”
